Dear Reader, Greetings to you from Jeju Island in South Korea! Summer has truly begun for me. Last week I packed up my classroom and completed the school year with my middle school students. I’m now traveling in Korea for a month with my husband, meeting family and enjoying this beautiful country. During the Spring season, I created several new paintings to add to my “PARADISE IS…” collection. (The above example is the latest edition) I also participated in two local art markets. Something fun and new that I’ve rediscovered is ceramics. I taught ceramics courses in the last few months at school and, I couldn’t resist making my own sculptures in clay. Ironically, I inherited 100 lbs of red clay while in Baltimore. I’ve been lugging this extra weight with me through several moves all the way to my Alexandria classroom - hoping there would be a right moment. At school, I have not one but two kilns in my room. 🤩 The moment has come! I first explored clay at MassArt in Boston during an exchange semester. I continued my work with clay as an assistant at Cynthia Curtis Pottery Studio in Rockport, MA back in 2016. It’s been years! I’m glad to back in this medium and I’ve been using it playfully to imitate aspects of nature that amaze me. I tend to overthink pretty much everything so it’s been refreshing to sculpt for fun with my students. Wishing you a playful summer where you can explore what you love. Thank you for being here!
