Dear Reader,

Happy Fall to you! And welcome to my seasonal newsletter. I send these quarterly messages as a way to celebrate the transition of the seasons and share about the happenings in my art practice. This reflects my artistic process which captures the beauty of nature and ordinary moments of life in paint and collage. Before sharing new work and offerings to you - I want to share a few recent thoughts about being an artist.

Artists experience a lot of doubt. You can select anyone - any new or seasoned artist and I can guarantee you that they doubt their path. Perhaps we all do, but the visibility and meandering process of being an artist is challenging to maintain. Often I struggle to validate the work I'm doing and I know of many other creatives who feel the same!

Coming Home | Snow Day | Waking Up in the Park

In one of my many doubtful periods this year, my dear friend Rachel came to visit me. We went to the National Gallery of Art and soaked up some impressionist colors. She shared how she loves to go to the Chicago Art Institute. In rushed and busy seasons, she craves to go and absorb a picture where an artist has slowed down and stopped. While the rest of the world speeds up and up, we need the artists to keep stopping and noticing and making for all the other folks who feel that they can't stop. What a testament to the artists. 

So dear reader, this artistic life is one for stopping and basking in the glories of nature, of painting striking moments and learning to slow down in this rushed culture. For anyone who feels that they need to slow down, art is always there for you! See a play, make a picture, attend a concert... the artists are making incredible things for us all to enjoy and you can join in, too.

Nature’s Viewfinder Series

Last Fall, I began creating acrylic paintings in this style of a wide format and up close views of nature. I’ve now accumulated quite the collection! I’ve coined it “Nature’s Viewfinder.” Several have found permanent homes but many new paintings have been added to the shop. Some of this collection will be on view at Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria, Virginia in February 2025.

Clay Box Turtle Collection

One of the many perks of being an art teacher is access to tools and materials. In my middle school art room, we have 2 electric kilns that I also get to use for my work! A fun project has been creating this ceramic collection of Box Turtles. I will continue to make more and I’ll release the collection for purchase, once it’s complete.
